HIGHLANDER debuts new series in Ras Al Khaimah
Founded in Croatia in 2017, the HIGHLANDER portfolio now spans over 30 events across more than 20 countries

The Middle East’s premier long-distance hiking event is returning to Ras Al Khaimah in November with the regional debut of the HIGHLANDER Summit Series, introducing a shorter, steeper trail format designed to highlight the emirate’s rugged mountain topography.

Scheduled for November 21–22, 2026, the event shifts the traditional long-distance endurance model toward vertical ascents, wadi crossings, and high-altitude mountain trails beneath Jebel Yabana and surrounding Jebel Jais.

Operating out of the Bear Grylls Adventure Camp as its official start and finish hub, the challenge is aimed at active travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and corporate groups seeking experiential adventure tourism in the Northern Emirates.

The 2026 edition features two dedicated itineraries open to participants aged 18 and above. HIGHLANDER 1DAY (November 22) is a 7 km circular route starting from Wadi Khammed, traversing canyon terrain, boulder fields, and a zigzag ascent to an altitude of 600 meters with 400 meters of cumulative elevation gain and loss.

HIGHLANDER 2DAY (November 21–22) is a two-day, 15 km self-sufficient backcountry trek covering approximately 845 meters of elevation gain. Day one ascends along historic mountain village terraces past Derat Takem before establishing high camp at Derat Halak (1,050 meters), with an optional summit vantage beneath Jebel Yabana reaching 1,190 meters. Day two navigates rocky ridges, wadi gullies, and goat trails back to the base.

Unlike competitive races, the HIGHLANDER Summit Series emphasises self-reliance, endurance, and environmental stewardship, adhering strictly to Leave No Trace conservation principles. Two-day participants are required to carry their own supplies and shelter, with official marshals and medical checkpoints stationed along marked trails.

Founded in Croatia in 2017, the HIGHLANDER portfolio now spans over 30 events across more than 20 countries. The Ras Al Khaimah iteration, now in its fifth year, has evolved into a key pillar of the emirate’s strategy to position itself as the leading regional hub for sustainable outdoor adventure and eco-tourism.

Registration is open, with entry fees starting from Dh250 ($68) for the one-day format and Dh550 ($150) for the two-day expedition, alongside team registration options for groups.
