Oxford Street’s lights bring Christmas cheer

Roast chestnuts, hot mulled wine and street carol singing means it’s Britain during the Christmas season, which this year starts in Oxford Street on November 7.

At John Lewis Oxford Street the christmas lights will be switched on at 6.17 pm by a world famous celebrity. The theme is Disney’s christmas movie, Enchanted, a classic Disney fairytale with a modern twist.

Oxford Street will host a many other activities throughout the day, including a live stage show high above the crowds starting at 5 pm to warm everyone up before the switch on ceremony.

Other Christmas events to note are the many markets that take place in November and December.

There is the Bath christmas market from November 29 to December 9, held on Kingston Parade next to the Abbey, the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham which is situated at Victoria Square and upper New Street making it the largest German market outside Germany or Austria and the open all year round St Nicolas Market in Bristol, a funky outdoor market features stalls selling everything from imported and handmade jewellery to traditional games and retro clothing.

The Lincoln Christmas Market in on from December 6 to 9, and is located in a cobbled square overlooking a floodlit 12th-century cathedral. Manchester Christmas Markets from 15 November 15 to December 19 incorporate a traditional German market, a European market and a crafts market. Don’t miss the marzipan and Gluwein stall.

The Winchester Christmas Market is located around the longest medieval Cathedral in Europe, the York Christmas Markets from November 23 to 26 include a whole range of markets such as a Children’s Christmas Fayre, Medieval Market, Crafts Stalls and St Nicholas Fayre – York’s biggest and most popular Christmas market.

Finally the Frost Fair in London from December 14 to 16 held at Bankside, is London’s largest free winter event and includes festive music, ice sculptors, street theatre, workshops, food and mulled wine and of course Christmas shopping at the winter market.
