The international Caravanning Show in Barcelona

The International Caravanning Show, which recently concluded its 38th edition at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue (October 11 to 19), confirmed that itinerant tourism is booming, driven by a new focus on sustainability, advanced technology and personalised comfort. The event showcased the latest innovations defining this rapidly expanding leisure segment, particularly emphasising proposals for younger and first-time buyers.

José Manuel Jurado, President of the Spanish Association of the Caravanning Industry and Commerce (ASEICAR) and Co-Presidentof the Organising Committee, described itinerant tourism as the most innovative phenomenon that currently energises the sector.

The audience profile was diverse, including families seeking different holidays, outdoor sports fans, and those who enjoy spontaneous, adventurous getaways. However, as Susana Colom, head of the Catalonia’s Caravaning Business Association (GREMCAR) and co-president of the Organising Committee, noted, all segments share the challenge of improving the travel experience in a broad sense.

Manufacturers are prioritising solutions that enhance safety and comfort both on the road and during stops. A major trend is the increased digitalisation and connectivity of vehicles, aimed at monitoring crucial trip aspects. This includes the integration of intelligent systems to control functions such as lighting, heating, and water levels. Notably, these advanced systems are now available to be added to existing caravans, not just new models.

In terms of interior design, brands are focusing on innovative layouts to optimise space and comfort. Trends include separate driver's cabs, facing seats, modular or rotating bathrooms and L-shaped kitchens.

The show highlighted the growing commitment to sustainability within the sector, evidenced by an increase in electrified and hybrid models. This trend aligns perfectly with a form of tourism whose main appeal is leisure connected to and respectful of the environment. Manufacturers are prioritising solutions that enhance both energy efficiency and autonomy.

Jurado stressed that caravan tourism offers a flexible leisure experience that "adapts to all budgets." This affordability is key to attracting new consumers.

The show gave significant prominence to camper van conversion, promoting it as the simplest way to enter the caravanning world. Attendees saw numerous camper models and modular solutions that allow easy van conversion without requiring a large initial investment. Furthermore, manufacturers are catering to budget-conscious buyers with mini-caravans—models that feature basic equipment and light materials, often priced below 20,000 euros.

The 38th International Caravanning Show occupied a substantial 34,000m² net space, featuring over 700 vehicle models from the sector’s main brands.
