Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar dies aged 92

Lata Mangeshkar, perhaps the most revered and well-known Indian singer, died this morning in Mumbai (Bombay) aged 92.
 
Mangeshkar, who inspired generations through the thousands of songs she sang, contracted Covid and was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital last month after suffering from severe symptoms of pneumonia. 
 
Lovingly called the "Nightingale of India", she started singing profession at the age of 13 and recorded her first song in 1942. In her career spanning seven decades, she has to her credit over 30,000 songs in different languages. 
 
Lata Mangeshkar was bestowed with India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 2001. She was also conferred with France’s highest civilian award, ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ (Officer of the Legion of Honour) in 2009.
