Discovering the Turaif District Exploring the historic Turaif District, the birthplace of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a lesson in ancient history. Walking through the tall, textured mud-brick walls of Salwa Palace, visitors can take in the remarkable Najdi and Islamic architecture. The tour guide shares fascinating stories about the palace and Wadi Hanifah, where early settlers thrived. The gentle cooing of pigeon echoes through the triangular vents of Najdi architecture, adding a peaceful ambiance to the journey. At the northeastern side of the Turaif District lies Salwa Palace, a landmark marking the district's entrance. Built in 1766 AD by Imam Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad ibn Saud, this historic monument served as the residence of the Al Saud royal family. It has witnessed significant milestones in the history of the First Saudi State, including the unification of much of the Arabian Peninsula and orders promoting adherence to Islamic teachings. Walking through the sunlit alleys connects visitors with history. From an elevated viewpoint, the lush Wadi Hanifah stretches out below, filled with agriculture and palm trees—a calming sight. At Diriyah Museum , visitors can discover antiques and crafts from the past. One standout piece is the Al-Ajrab sword, linked to Imam Turki bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud, the founder of the Second Saudi State. This sword symbolises his role in establishing stability in the region and was entrusted to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2015. The sword is associated with Imam Turki’s famous verse: "From the day each of his companions disassociated, I placed al-Ajrab as my friend, to fight." As the sun began to set, its golden rays reflected off the mud bricks of At-Turaif, creating a magical atmosphere that enveloped the valley.
Wadi Safar: A Luxurious Retreat During our quick tour, we stopped at Wadi Safar to have a short lesson on how to golf at the golf academy, accompanied by a refreshing locally made soda lemonade. For lovers of Mediterranean cuisine, the Taleed restaurant at Bab Samhan Hotel, led by Michelin-starred Chef Michael Mina, artfully merges traditional Hijazi flavors with Mediterranean flair. A standout dish is the shrimp kabsa, a delightful take on Saudi Arabia's national dish. This flavorful mix of rice and spices, traditionally made with camel, lamb, chicken, or fish, was a revelation when prepared with shrimp. Each bite was a delicious journey through Saudi culinary traditions. Celebrating the region’s culinary heritage with a modern twist, Najdi Signature Restaurant at Bab Samhan Hotel, helmed by talented Saudi chefs, features an exquisite menu. The mint hummus, with its vibrant green hue, was not only visually stunning but also incredibly tasty, while the main courses were presented in an artistically appealing manner.
