Art Space debuts new expo at Four Seasons Bangkok

The Art Space by Moca Bangkok at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River has debuted  its latest exhibition Timeless Path, by Thai artist Torlap Larpjaroensook, exploring the linearity of time.
        
In Timeless Path past, present and future co-exist. The centrepiece of the exhibition is Voyager (2022). Launched in 1977, the year Larpjaroensook was born, Voyager I is now the most distant man-made object. As of December 2022, it is 14.8 billion miles (23.8 billion kilometres) away from Earth.

Displayed with this work is a screen showing real-time information on Voyager I from NASA on a wooden frame that was once part of the artist’s old family boat. Every signal received from the spacecraft is from the past, its present is our future.

“Timeless Path demonstrates the artist’s attempt to connect to something beyond our world, into the deep space beyond our common logic and perception,” said Moca Bangkok Managing Director and exhibition co-curator Kanachai Bencharongkul.

“This exhibition is an extension of Larpjaroensook’s previous dual show, Out of this World with Tawee Ratchaneekorn, at Moca Bangkok. While that exhibition presented an outlook and a comparison of two artists and practices, this one includes additional work and uncovers how Larpjaroensook is trying to deconstruct the timeline within the context of his artwork, to reflect on his thought, life and society.”

Signal (2022), one of the new art pieces for this show, reminds guests of a time prior to the invention of smartphones, when people needed to write down phone numbers and remembered the numbers of those close to them by heart. An old phone dial links to a light on the screen revealing an image of the artist’s childhood home where he lived with his grandmother in Ayutthaya.

Many works displayed, including three additional pieces from the Spiritual Spaceship series (2019), are made from found and household objects widely used in the past. Some of these readymade objects were collected from the artist’s old house. Objects of memory have been rearranged and assembled to replicate a spaceship, suggesting their new purpose and significance.

Personal and collective memories play a crucial role in Larpjaroensook’s ongoing artistic practice. Viewers may spot their grandma’s pots and other utensils in the work, similar to the ones they grew up with. Yet, each burn, mark and bend represent the different path and story of each individual.
Timeless Path demonstrates the artist’s attempt to connect to something beyond our world, into the deep space beyond our common logic and perception. In interstellar space and as in this exhibition, the past, present and future are intertwined, leaving viewers to ponder their life and position within this particular moment, space and time.

Timeless Path is a complementary exhibit for all guests and patrons at the Four Seasons Bangkok Art Space curated by Nim Niyomsin and Bencharongkul.
