India has made RT-PCR tests for Covid-19 mandatory for those arriving in the country from China, South Korea, Japan and Thailand.

Announcing the reintroduction of the tests, India's Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the move is part of the country's preparedness to check the spread of coronavirus.

The decision follows a huge spike in cases in China this month.

The Air Suvidha portal registration will be implemented for passengers arriving from the countries mentioned. After arriving in India, if passengers test positive, they will be quarantined, said the minister.

India has been recording only a few hundred cases daily.

"There is no need to panic. We have 3 years of experience in pandemic management. The Centre Govt will provide all the support to combat COVID-19. We will take action as per the needs," the minister said.

Earlier, India announced plans to conduct thermal screening at its international airports of all arriving passengers from abroad. It will also randomly test two percent of all international arrivals for coronavirus infections, Mandaviya said.
